One of the more interesting things emerging from the Thai rescue story is that the coach Ekapol Chanthawong was a former Buddhist monk and kept the kids calm by teaching meditation techniques to them. In fact, the British divers who originally discovered the kids found them meditating together.
As reported by BigThink.com, the meditation might have actually helped them survive.
Meditation creates a calming effect by slowing down the heart rate, breathing and metabolism, said Weiss. It also lowers the levels of cortisol and oxygen utilization. A meditating person would also emit less carbon dioxide.
