A pair of surfers rode the waves of Lake Superior during the polar vortex and posed with tridents!

February 5, 2019

Because humans are both amazing and absolutely lunatic, there are a couple of dedicated surfers who thought it was a good idea to ride Lake Superior during the polar vortex.

Photographer Devon Hains took some amazing snapshots of surfers Daniel “Surfer Dan” Schetter and Allen Finau as they put on layer after layer of clothing and dived right into Lake Superior.

The cold was so intense that the surfer had to wear several laters of thermal wear just to get in, but according to Devon Hains the pair are used to it.

“They go out and surf in them often,” he said. “Some of the best waves in Lake Superior come with the winter snow and ice. So, after trying to get some waves on Sunday, but struggling with ice buildup on the surf boards, they decided to get out their tridents and we shot that with the waves for a while.”

The photos are amazing, showing the two men in deep winter looking like Aquaman!

The tridents aren’t just for show. They help the surfers break the ice on their board or to shatter the ice in the water.

There he goes in all his majesty.

The air was apparently so cold that the icicles forming on the surfer’s beard and eyebrows were just the wet molecules from their breath.

Still, totally worth it. Look how cool these guys look!
