People LOVE using hand sanitizers because, let's face it, we live in a filthy world. I commute on the New York subway system daily and, let me tell you, no metal pole should feel that oily. So I used to trot off the train and give my hands a quick rub down with some sanitizer. Easy peasy, right? Well GUESS WHAT that ain't a good idea either.
First, hand sanitizers kill off everything, including good bacteria. Most hand sanitizers contain triclosan, which is both a nightmare for my computer's autocorrect AND helps promote antibiotic resistant strains to flourish. We learned yesterday that our over reliance on antibiotics are creating super viruses that are coming for us all.
Even worse (well, maybe, I'm not great at figuring out comparative terror) is that PLOS1 published a research paper where the findings showed that use of hand sanitizers increase the risk of BPA exposure. BPA stands for Bisephenol-A and it's a chemical used in the production of almost all hard plastics. BPA essentially disrupts our own hormones in a way that throws off the body's natural endocrine system. It's been linked to heart disease, hormone disorders, cancers, infertility, and diabetes, so that's not something you want in your system. Hand sanitizers make it even easier for compounds like BPA to penetrate your skin.
